Patient monitors generally fall into three categories. Basic vital signs monitors measure the core parameters: blood pressure (NIBP), oxygen saturation (SpO2), pulse rate, and temperature. These are suitable for general wards, outpatient departments, and low-acuity settings where continuous multi-parameter monitoring is not required. Multi-parameter monitors add ECG (electrocardiogram) monitoring, respiratory rate, and sometimes capnography (CO2 monitoring) or cardiac output measurement. These are the standard for intensive care units, high-dependency wards, emergency departments, and operating theatres. Multi-parameter monitors allow clinicians to track a complete picture of the patient's physiological status and respond quickly to changes. Most models also include programmable alarm thresholds, trending data storage, and networking capability for connection to a central monitoring station.
Portable and transport monitors are compact, battery-powered units designed for moving patients between departments, during ambulance transfers, or for use in settings where space is limited. They typically offer the same parameters as multi-parameter monitors in a smaller form factor with battery life ranging from four to eight hours depending on usage and settings.
Screen size and visibility: A 12-inch or larger screen is recommended for ICU and emergency settings where multiple waveforms must be viewed simultaneously. Smaller 5-inch to 8-inch screens are acceptable for general wards and transport use. Ensure the screen is bright enough to be readable in various lighting conditions and offers adjustable brightness settings.
Parameter coverage: Consider which parameters your clinical team actually needs. Adding unnecessary parameters increases cost without benefit. However, choosing a monitor that can be upgraded with additional parameter modules later gives you flexibility as your facility's needs grow. Alarm system: An effective alarm system is critical for patient safety. Look for monitors with adjustable alarm thresholds, visual and audible alarms, alarm history logging, and different alarm priority levels. Data storage and networking: Modern monitors store patient trend data that can be reviewed retrospectively. If you plan to connect multiple monitors to a central nursing station, ensure the monitors support the required networking protocol (usually wired Ethernet or Wi-Fi). Battery life: For monitors used in transport or in facilities with unstable power, battery life is a critical consideration. Look for monitors with at least two hours of battery backup, and consider purchasing an additional battery for extended use.

Recommended for clinics, outpatient departments, and facilities where budget is the primary constraint.
Shenzhen Medical provides a middle-ground option with reliable multi-parameter monitors at competitive pricing. Their equipment is widely used in East African hospitals and offers good parameter coverage and solid build quality. Their local presence in Uganda is growing, with improving spare parts availability and technical support.
What is the intended use setting — general ward, ICU, emergency, or transport? Which vital parameters do your clinical staff need to monitor routinely?
